STAR-certified smog checks.
If your DMV notice says a STAR station is required, you’re at the right place. Shak A Tech is STAR certified, so we can inspect and issue the certificate of compliance the DMV is asking for — and repair the vehicle if it doesn’t pass.
What STAR means
A higher standard set by the Bureau of Automotive Repair.
The DMV directs a share of vehicles to STAR stations — stations monitored more closely by the Bureau of Automotive Repair and held to higher performance standards. Being selected doesn’t mean anything is wrong with your car; it’s simply where the DMV wants the inspection done.
As a STAR station we can certify both DMV-directed vehicles and ordinary registration-renewal smog checks. And because we’re also a full repair shop, we’re one of the few places that can test, repair and retest your vehicle in a single stop.
Smog & repair FAQ
Good to know
What is a STAR smog check?
A smog check at a station the DMV monitors more closely. If your notice names a STAR station, that’s what we are.
How do I know if I need a STAR station?
Your DMV renewal notice will say a STAR station is required. If it does, bring it here.
Why was my car directed to a STAR station?
The DMV sends a portion of vehicles to STAR stations for added oversight. It isn’t a sign of a problem.
Can you repair my car if it fails?
Yes — unlike a test-only station, we can diagnose and repair it here, then retest it free.
Do you charge more for a STAR smog?
No — it’s the same $34.75 coupon price for most cars and light trucks.
Do you certify gross polluters?
Yes — bring it in and our team will advise on the repairs and certification.
Is the certificate filed with the DMV?
Yes — electronically, usually within minutes of passing.
